How to Play Yahtzee

Yahtzee is a classic dice-rolling game where strategy meets chance. Your goal is to score the most points by rolling five dice to make specific combinations across 13 rounds.

🎯 Objective

The objective is to achieve the highest total score by filling in 13 categories on your scorecard. You must weigh the risk of rerolling against the reward of securing a high-scoring combination.

The Game Flow

✓

First Roll:

Roll all five dice. You can choose to stop here and score, or move to a second roll.

✓

Second & Third Rolls:

Set aside any 'keepers' and reroll the remaining dice. You can change which dice you keep after the second roll.

✓

Scoring:

After your third roll (or earlier if you choose), you must select an empty category on your scorecard to record your points.

✓

Ending the Game:

The game ends after 13 turns, when every category on the scorecard has been filled. The player with the highest grand total wins.

Yahtzee Scorecard Rules

✓

Ones-Sixes:

Add the matching dice. Reach 63 points across the six boxes to earn a 35-point bonus.

✓

Three and Four of a Kind.

For these categories, you must have at least three or four dice of the same number. You score the sum of all five dice.

✓

Small and Large Straights.

A Small Straight is Four sequential numbers (like 2-3-4-5) score 30 points. A Large Straight is Five sequential numbers (1-2-3-4-5 or 2-3-4-5-6) score 40 points.

✓

Full House.

Three of one number and two of another. This combination is worth a fixed 25 points.

✓

The Yahtzee.

Five of a kind scores 50 points. If you roll additional Yahtzees after the first, you get a 100-point bonus.

✓

Chance.

No specific pattern is required. The score is simply the sum of all five dice.

Strategies to Win Yahtzee

  • Chase the 35-Point Bonus.

Focus on getting at least three of each number in the Upper Section. This ensures you hit the 63-point threshold for the vital bonus.

  • Don't Waste Your Yahtzee Slot.

Unless it is late in the game, avoid putting a zero in the Yahtzee box. It's often better to zero out the 'Ones' category if you are struggling.

  • Maximize the Chance Box.

Save your 'Chance' for a roll where you have high-value dice (4s, 5s, and 6s) but failed to hit a specific combination.

  • Go for Straights Early.

Straights are often the hardest to hit. If you have 2-3-4 or 3-4-5 early in your rolls, it's often worth chasing the straight rather than a pair.

Is Yahtzee Purely Luck?

While dice rolls are random, Yahtzee is a game of probability management. Consistent winners understand the odds of completing a sequence versus a set and know exactly when to pivot their strategy based on the scorecard requirements.
