What is Spades?

Spades is a classic trick-taking card game played by four players in teams of two, where the goal is to predict (bid) how many tricks your team will win in each round and then achieve that target. It combines strategy and teamwork, as players must plan their moves carefully, use spades as the trump suit to win rounds, and coordinate with their partner to outplay the opponents.

Objective of the Game

The objective of Spades is to accurately predict how many tricks your team will win in each round and then work together to achieve that bid. Players must use strategy, timing, and coordination with their partner to win tricks, avoid over- or under-scoring, and ultimately reach the target score before the opposing team.

How to Play Spades

Spades is played by four players in two teams with a standard 52-card deck, where each player is dealt 13 cards and bids how many tricks they expect to win. Players must follow the leading suit if possible, and spades act as the trump suit, meaning they can beat any other suit. The goal is to win tricks according to your bid, and teams score points by meeting their bid while failing to do so results in penalties.

Spades Setup

Spades uses a standard 52 card deck and is set up as follows:

  • Teams: The game is played with four players divided into two teams, with teammates sitting opposite each other to work together throughout the game.
  • Dealing: At the start of each round, all 52 cards are dealt evenly so each player gets 13 cards, and the role of dealer moves to the left after every round.
  • Card Rank: Cards are ranked from lowest to highest, with Ace being the highest card in each suit.
  • Trump Suit: Spades are always the trump suit, meaning they can beat cards from any other suit during a trick.

SpadesRules

Each round of Spades is structured into three distinct phases, guiding the flow of gameplay from start to finish.

Bidding

  • Make Your Bid: Each player predicts how many tricks they can win based on their cards, considering strong cards like aces, kings, and the number of spades available as trump.
  • Team Target: Both partners combine their bids to set a total goal, and the team must work together to win that exact number of tricks to score points.

Playing Tricks

  • Play Cards: Each player places one card per turn to form a trick, starting from the player to the dealer’s left, and play continues clockwise with the winner of each trick leading the next.
  • Follow Suit: Players must follow the suit of the first card played if possible; otherwise, they can play any card, including a spade.
  • Use Spades: Spades act as the trump suit but cannot be played first until they are “broken,” either by trumping another suit or when a player has only spades left.
  • Win Tricks: The highest card of the leading suit wins the trick unless a spade is played, in which case the highest spade wins.

Scoring

ResultPointsExample
Exact BidYou earn 10 points for each trick you bid and win.Team bids 5 and wins 5 → 50 points
Overtricks (Bags)You get 10 points per bid trick + 1 extra point for each additional trick (bag).Team bids 5 and wins 7 → 52 points (50 + 2 bags)
Under BidYou lose 10 points for each trick you originally bid.Team bids 5 but wins 4 → -50 points
Bag Limit PenaltyCollecting 10 bags results in a -100 point penalty, and bag count resets.Already 8 bags + 2 new = 10 → -100 points
Nil SuccessIf a player bids nil and wins 0 tricks, the team earns 100 points.Player bids nil and wins none → +100 points
Nil FailedIf a nil bid fails, the team loses 100 points, and tricks won don’t count.Player bids nil but wins tricks → -100 points

Spades Strategies

  • Bid Smartly: Focus on making a realistic bid you can achieve. Overbidding or underbidding can cost points, and extra tricks (bags) may lead to penalties over time.
  • Read Opponents: Pay attention to your opponents’ bids and gameplay to understand their strategy and anticipate which tricks they aim to win or avoid.
  • Track Spades: Keep count of the spades that have been played to better predict when opponents might use trump cards.
  • Protect Nil Bids: If your partner bids nil, support them by winning tricks they might accidentally take, helping avoid heavy penalties.
  • Use Trump Wisely: Save your high spades for important moments when they can secure key tricks against opponents.
  • Avoid Extra Bags: Don’t collect unnecessary extra tricks, as accumulating too many bags can result in a significant score penalty.
  • Play to Your Bid: Once you’ve made your bid, focus on achieving it rather than taking risks for extra tricks unless it’s safe to do so.
